Dr Kasinathuni Viswanath is a film director, screenwriter and actor from the Telugu film industry. He started his career as an audiographer at Vahini Studios, Chennai. His first directorial venture Atma Gauravam (1965) won him his first award, the prestigious Nandi Award. His film Sankarabharanam (1979) was a tribute to Indian classical music and is considered a landmark in the industry. It bagged four National Awards and many international acclaims. His film Swathi Muthyam was sent for the Oscars in 1986. He has also directed films in Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam. Honoured with the Padma Shri in 1992, he has won the National Award five times, Nandi Award 12 times and the Filmfare Award South 11 times.
